Why do we need to read the Bible?

Why do we need to read the Bible?

This is a question frequently posed by recently converted individuals who are having trouble grasping the Bible or finding the motivation to read it every day. These are but a few justifications for why it is imperative that all Christians regularly read the Bible.

It is God’s Word

The Bible should not be read or studied like any other book because it is not like any other book. The Bible is God’s actual word. “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,” as 2 Timothy 3:16 actually states. Every time we read it and open it, it feels like [God is communicating]. Because of this, the Bible possesses a strength and authority that are unmatched in all of literature. It is the only one that can define right and wrong. It is crucial that us Christians understand what it says and follow it.

It is alive

Hebrews 4:12 reads, “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” The Word of God is alive and at work within us each time we interact with it. The truths found in Scripture pierce our hearts, minds, and souls in ways that nothing else can. Many times, God uses it to convict us of sin in our lives. Other times, He uses it to remind us of the sweet promises available to those who love Him. The Bible reveals to us who God is, who we are, and why we so desperately need Him. Furthermore, no one has become a born-again Christian without hearing the Good News of Jesus Christ, which is recorded in the Gospels.

It is a lamp

Additionally, believers can find wisdom and guidance in the Bible. The Psalmist refers to God’s Word as “a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” in Psalm 119:105. God’s Word makes clear what He wants for all of humanity. The Bible offers comfort in the knowledge that God will illuminate our way when we feel directionless or lost in life. Even though we might not be able to see everything, we will still have enough light to follow Him.

It is a sword

And last, the most powerful tool we have to combat sin and temptation is the Bible. Jesus overcame Satan’s temptation in the desert by reciting passages from memory from the Bible. Jesus declared in Matthew 4:4 that “man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” We need the Bible more than “our necessary food” (Job 23:12) because it gives believers the tools they need to fight spiritual battles. It is made clear in Ephesians 6:17 that the Bible is referred to as the “sword of the Spirit.” When the opponent approaches us with charges and lies, we use it to wield truth and triumph. To be prepared for battle, we must train, just like a proficient warrior.

The Bible was not written for a select group of people or delivered to angels or animals. It’s meant for all men, women, boys, and girls, including you. God [wants to be intimately involved with you]. As with any good connection, open communication is necessary. Friend, God has something to speak to you. However, unless you are listening to His Word, the Bible, you won’t know what it is. Read it over the course of today.
