Who created the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is God

One of the three members of the godhead is the Holy Spirit. God is triune—He resides as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit rather than as a single entity. Speaking is one of the most prominent metaphors the Bible uses to help us comprehend God in this way. With the breath of God (the Spirit), God the Father speaks the Word of God (the Son).

The Holy Spirit is omnipresent (Psalm 139:7–10), omniscient (1 Corinthians 2:10–11), omnipotent (Luke 1:35–37), holy (Romans 1:4), and eternal (Hebrews 9:14) are only a few of the Bible passages that demonstrate that the Holy Spirit is entirely God.

The ancient Christian creeds

The ancient Christian creeds are the statements of belief which all Christian churches agree on. They describe the basic truths about God on which everything else in the Christian faith depends. The Athanasian Creed says about the Holy Spirit:
“Such as the Father is; such is the Son; and such is the Holy Ghost.
The Father uncreated; the Son uncreated; and the Holy Ghost uncreated.
The Father unlimited; the Son unlimited; and the Holy Ghost unlimited.
The Father eternal; the Son eternal; and the Holy Ghost eternal.
And yet they are not three eternals; but one eternal.
As also there are not three uncreated; nor three infinites, but one uncreated; and one infinite
[…]
The Holy Ghost is of the Father and of the Son; neither made, nor created, nor begotten; but proceeding.”

The Holy Spirit is descended from the Father and the Son throughout all eternity, but this does not imply that He was made by them or that He is any less of a person or God than they are. It is merely a means of characterizing their long-standing relationship. In addition to being “self-existent,” each member of the Trinity depends on the others to be who they are. For instance, the Father cannot be a “father” without the Son being a “son.”

Speaker, Word and Breath

Though it’s difficult to understand, consider the biblical image of speaking with a new voice. The Father, Son, and Spirit can be thought of as “Speaker, Word, and Breath.” Without the speaker and his words, the breath would cease to exist. Without the speaker and the breath that propels him forward, the word would not exist as such. And unless the speaker was uttering the words under his breath, he would not qualify as a speaker.

This is a beautiful image of God, who has existed as a storyteller or singer for all of eternity. The Bible speaks of God acting in human form. In Genesis 1:1–3, 6, 9, and other places, God speaks to create the world. In Hebrews 1–3, He talks to sustain the world, and in Isaiah 55:11 and 1 Peter 2–9, He speaks to save it from our sins.

The Holy Spirit has not been created

The early church carefully considered and summarized the biblical evidence, which made it abundantly evident that the Holy Spirit is God and has been so from the beginning. He existed from the beginning of time and was not made.
