What is the Trinity?

The Bible is the written word of God, the Creator and Sustainer of the cosmos. The Bible makes it very evident that there is only one God. Deuteronomy 6:4 states, “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.” However, the Bible contains numerous passages that demonstrate that the one God is actually made up of several persons. We find it difficult to comprehend this. We ought to understand that this is a result of our limits rather than a logical conflict. That God is more beautiful and complicated than we can comprehend is not unusual. We are humans, and he is God.

Plurality in God

There are literally three individuals in God, as we can see when we combine the verses that discuss his plurality. The triune God—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We refer to this as the Trinity. The Bible doesn’t use the word “trinity.” However, the idea is there. It alludes to a triune God.

There are several verses in the Old Testament that make a distinction between God the Father and God the Son. David states in Psalm 110:1, “The LORD says to my Lord…” as a glaring example. David must be referring to a heavenly Lord who is different from the LORD because, as king, he had no earthly lord. When Jesus states in Matthew 22:41–45 that this scripture is about Him and suggests that He is the Son of God, this is confirmed.

The Lord and His Spirit are distinguished in other texts. Isaiah 48:16, for instance, states, “And now the Lord GOD has sent me, and His Spirit.” It is clear that a person cannot exist without His spirit in them. But there is a distinction. Verses pointing to God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit can already be found in the Old Testament. Hence, the birth of Jesus Christ did not create God the Son. Like the Father and the Spirit, he is eternal. But He took on flesh in Jesus.

New Testament

All of this is much more evident in the New Testament. We learn about God the Father’s divinity from numerous texts. Take 1 Corinthians 8:6 as one example. “All things originate from the Father, who is the only God for us.” Numerous verses instruct us regarding the deity of God the Son. Titus 2:13, which states, “…the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,” is one instance. Numerous verses inform us of God’s divinity through the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 6:11, which states, “You were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God,” is one instance.

The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are stated beside each other several times in the New Testament. That, in a sense, dispels any doubt as to their equality and Godhood. Among them are:

  • “So, go and make disciples in every nation.” In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, by baptism (Matthew 28:19).
  • We are all witnesses to the resurrection of this Jesus, whom God revived. Thus, having been raised to the right hand of God and having obtained the Holy Spirit’s promise from the Father. Acts 2:32–33 states, “He has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.”
  • “The love of God, the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, and the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all” (2 Corinthians 13:14).
  • …in the sanctification of the Spirit, in accordance with the Father’s foresight. according to Jesus Christ, for obedience (1 Peter 1:2).

We need all three

Thus, God is revealed as God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit in the Bible. They are all necessary to us. Our Creator is God the Father. Our Savior is God the Son. And God sanctifies us with the Holy Spirit. Let’s just express our gratitude when we find it difficult to comprehend the idea of a triune God:

Hallowed, hallowed, hallowed! Almighty, Lord God Almighty! We will sing to Thee in the early dawn hours; Holy, holy, holy, merciful, and great! God the Trinity, wonderful triune Person!
