Angels are described as “ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation” in Hebrews 1:14.
Angels are serving spirits
Three things concerning angels are revealed to us in this text. First of all, angels are spiritual beings. Their bodies are nonexistent. As they did upon Jesus’ resurrection, they might manifest to humans in human form (see Matthew 28:3; Mark 16:5; Luke 24:4). However, as the narrative of Elisha’s prayer for his servant’s eyes to be enlightened to recognize the presence of angels surrounding the city (2 Kings 6:15–17) illustrates, their presence is typically veiled from human sight.
Second, angels are spirits that minister. Angels are by their by nature servants. The angels are arranged in a hierarchy, with some holding high positions such as thrones, dominions, rulers, and authority (Colossians 1:16). However, they are meant to serve. They are God’s servants. But they assist the believers as well.
God protects us with His angels
Thirdly, angels are there to serve God’s children above all others. The Bible is not quite clear about the nature of their work since it emphasizes that we should put God first and not become unduly fixated on angels. However, there are at least two ways that angels assist God’s children.
- Hebrews 1:14 suggests a connection between believers’ inheritance of salvation and the angels’ ministry. Angels, then, are involved in setting up conditions that will cause God’s elect to hear the Gospel and respond to it.
- Angels encircle a city in 2 Kings 6:15–17 to safeguard God’s prophet. Angels thus have a part in shielding believers from harm to their bodies. Psalm 34:7, which states, “The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them,” says the same thing.
What we can be sure of
We will only discover the precise manner in which the angels have aided us in heaven. But we are aware that it occurs often. Jesus states, “Make sure you do not hate even one of these little ones,” in Matthew 18:10. For I tell you that my [Father’s] face is constantly visible to their angels in heaven. Angels are constantly prepared to hear from God and assist believers.
To know that God is sending powerful angels to assist us is a great blessing. It demonstrates how much He values and loves us.
