What does God teach us in Colossians?

Paul wrote a very unique letter to the Colossians. It is evident to anyone who read this letter that the person of Jesus Christ is emphasized heavily. This is due to a very significant reason. False teachings of all types that have distorted the Gospel pose a threat to the church at Colossae.

Tempted to relax in dedication

As stated in 1 Corinthians 2:2, Paul the apostle “decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified,” so it must have been a heartbreaking circumstance for him. And while the believers in Colossae have started with the Spirit, they are now tempted, like the churches in Galatia, to search for spiritual resources and eternal life outside of Jesus Christ!

False teachers in the church of the Colossians

Paul therefore states that he is suffering for the sake of the gospel in the first two chapters of Colossians 1:24–2:5. The Colossians are now facing out against those who propagate false gospels (Galatians 1:6). These bogus instructors assert that they can achieve a higher spiritual level or even a closer relationship with God through their exceptional experiences. They exalt themselves in practices like as asceticism or paranormal encounters. In Colossians 2:23, Paul refers to it as “self-made religion, of no value.”

Jesus and Jesus alone

Paul gives a thorough account of Jesus Christ’s life and ministry in order to refute this incorrect teaching. According to Colossians 1:15-23 and 2:6–15, Jesus is the Son of God; everything was created through and for him; on the cross, he died for our sins and overcame Satan and his demons, disarming the rulers and authorities and putting them to shame.

Look at Jesus

There are real-world applications for what Jesus accomplished in the life of a Christian. They are called to focus their thoughts on things above now that they have a relationship with Christ. This means that, according to Colossians 3:1–4, believers should always turn to Jesus and the spiritual resources He offers. A Christian’s life is concealed in God with Jesus!

Jesus instead of legal rules

As a result, no Christian should feel guilty about issues for which God’s Word is silent. Which foods do you consume? Which day are you observing? Paul urges us to trust on God and come to our own conclusions about these issues. He vehemently opposes turning decisions based on one’s inner conscience into binding laws for all believers. Christians ought to concentrate on Jesus and His mission. They can only then represent God’s nature (Colossians 3:10). Christians are unable to accomplish this by simply abiding by the laws or norms.

Living in love

People both inside and outside the church should observe how everything is perfectly in harmony because of love for Jesus (Colossians 3:14). In the lives of God’s children, love and gratitude go hand in hand. Their marriages (husbands-wives), [childrearing] (parents-sons/daughters), and workplace (servants-masters) will all demonstrate it. Our sole reward is Jesus. According to Colossians 3:18–4:6, Christians are called to live out of this hope.

In summary, the universe is in the hands of just One, and that One is Jesus Christ alone. He is the great Creator and Savior. Come to Him for life and, if you already consider yourself a Christian, carry on living in His presence and studying His Word!
