In the Garden of Eden, there were two trees: the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil (Genesis 2:9).

The Tree of Life

Eternal life is symbolized by the Tree of Life. According to Genesis 3:22, everyone who eats from the tree of life shall therefore live forever. God banned man from eating from the tree of life once he fell into sin. If he did this, he would be condemned to an eternal life of sin and suffering in this world.

Revelation 22:2, 22:14 states that individuals who have trusted in Christ will be allowed to partake of the tree of life in the New Jerusalem at the end of time.

The Tree of Knowledge

In the Garden of Eden, the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil was placed as a test. Would Adam and Eve strive to become their own rulers by determining what was right or wrong for themselves, or would they submit to God’s lordship and refrain from eating from the tree? According to Genesis 2:17, the LORD had said that eating from the tree was bad and that the day they did so, they would undoubtedly perish.

To judge what is good

They knew good before they ate the fruit of this tree, but they were ignorant of [bad]. Because of their act of disobedience, which perverted the good that was present, they experienced evil firsthand by choosing to eat from the tree. They caused sin and misery to enter the human race by determining what was right and wrong for themselves. The purpose of the test was to see if Adam and Eve would believe that God was good or that they could evaluate what was good better on their own. By the time they believed they understood what was best for them, they were superior to God. Thus, sin and death were the outcome.
