Should we pray to Mary?

Child bible praying

According to the Bible, God is the only One to whom you should address your prayers.

Important role

Jesus’ mother Mary played a significant part in God’s plan of salvation. Her mission was to introduce Jesus to the globe. What the angel Gabriel said to Mary concerning her role is preserved for us by the gospel writer Luke: “Mary, do not be afraid; you have found favor with God.” A Son is to be conceived and born into your family; He is to be known as Jesus. He will be referred to as the Son of the Most High and will be magnificent. He will inherit His father David’s throne from the Lord, and He will rule over Jacob’s lineage forever. The kingdom He establishes will never come to an end. Luke 1:31–33

From birth to after crucifixion

Mary was a good and loving mother to Jesus from the time He was born until after His crucifixion and resurrection. In Acts 1:14 we read “They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.” Mary, like all the others, prayed to God. And on the day of Pentecost Mary was there with the other disciples of Jesus when, “Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” (Acts 2:2-4)

Jesus intercedes for us

Mary was a devoted follower of Jesus as well as a caring mother. Mary is not the divine. She never requested us to pray to her, thus we shouldn’t do so. However, Jesus has asked that we pray to Him in this way: “And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may glorify the Father.” You can ask Me for anything, and I will fulfill your request in My name. (John 14:13–14). As a result, “He (Jesus) is able to save completely those who come to God through Him, because He always lives to intercede for them,” rather than Mary, is the one who makes the intercession on our behalf. (Read Hebrews 7:25).

Only through Christ

Only Jesus can intercede on our behalf before God, according to 1 Timothy 2:5–6, which states unequivocally that “there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people.”

Because only Jesus has the ability to atone for our sins, we are the only ones who can approach God.

Only to God

“You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above, on earth below, or in the waters below,” declares God in the commandment He gave. Because I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, you are not allowed to worship them or kneel down to them. (Exodus 20:4-5). “Jealous” in this context refers to God’s refusal to have us give away to another what is rightfully His. We are God’s people; we worship and pray to Him alone.
