What does it mean that Jesus is the perfect priest?

Was Jesus the perfect priest?

Jesus does not have to continually give sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people, as the other high priests do. When He gave Himself, He made a final sacrifice for their sins (Hebrews 7:27).

Priests of the old covenant

The ancient priests and Jesus, the new high priest, are two starkly different pictures that the author of Hebrews presents.Like you and me, the priests of the ancient covenant were common people. Like you and me, they could only serve for a certain amount of years before passing away. They had to make sacrifices for themselves before they could give sacrifices for the people since, like you and I, they were also sinful people. Since the sacrifices were never actually sufficient to atone for sin, they had to be made repeatedly. The hue of this picture appears flat and smeared.

Jesus the perfect high priest

The author then focuses our attention to the other, flawless image that glistens with vivid hues. For all time, it presents us with Jesus the high priest, [who sacrificed himself as the perfect sacrifice] (see Hebrews 9:12; 10:14). Unlike you and me, he was holy, faultless, and pure; he had never sinned. He is the eternal holder of the priesthood because, in contrast to you and me, He never passes away. The law appointed the priests of old, but God appointed Jesus by saying, “You are a priest forever” (Psalm 110:4, Hebrews 7:17), an oath that cannot be broken or annulled.

Because of Jesus, we don’t have to fear rejection

Since Jesus is flawless, He is able to satisfy all of our wants, and we can approach God with confidence in him. He always offers us his prayers. “For Christ has entered heaven itself, now to appear in God’s presence on our behalf, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things” (Hebrews 9:24; see also Romans 8:34 and 1 John 2:1). We don’t need to be afraid of rejection because we are flawed individuals. The devil may try to convince you that your sinfulness makes it better for you to stay away from Jesus. But this chapter makes it very evident that Jesus can rescue us entirely (Hebrews 7:25). Enjoy the splendor of
