How did Jesus learn obedience?

Three wooden crosses

As children grow up, obedience is a necessary skill. A child turns mischievous and disagreeable when he does not learn to respect his parents and teachers. “Even though He was a son, He learned obedience through what He suffered,” according to Hebrews 5:8.Did Jesus have to be taught how to obey? This is such a bizarre thought, somehow. Was He not blameless and flawless at all times?

Jesus was struggling with God’s plan

However, the book of Hebrews tells us that even though He was a son, His suffering taught Him to obey. He thus had to learn to give His life in accordance with God’s designs. Jesus appears to be having difficulty understanding the Father’s plan for Him in one specific passage in the Bible. It is the instant before He would be taken into custody, when He was by Himself in the Gethsemane Garden. Jesus was apprehensive about drinking from the “cup.” [He was aware that He would face excruciating anguish.]

Jesus entrusted Himself to His father

Jesus bowed down to the One who could save Him from death, “offering up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears” (Hebrews 5:7). It was a sincere request for assistance from God, not just any prayer! But while in terrible agony, Jesus continued, saying, “Nevertheless, it is not My will but Yours, be done” (Luke 22:42). According to our scripture from Hebrews, Jesus’ veneration made Him heard. (Read Hebrews 5:7).

Salvation in Jesus’ obedience

Was Jesus exempt from drinking the cup of pain as a result of this? No, but God sent an angel to give Him the fortitude to bear everything that lay ahead. Luke 22:43 Jesus’ obedience is the reason that everyone who obeys him can now find salvation!

Learn to be like Jesus

Jesus shared our humanity in every way. He needed to acquire obedience. Just like we should, he prayed to God with tremendous reverence and emotion. Though Jesus did not always get what He asked for, He did get the courage to accept God’s will for His life. Take a cue from Jesus and learn to obey Him! You can find everlasting redemption.
