How has sin affected man?

“You may surely eat of every tree in the garden, but of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die,” God commanded Adam when He created him (Genesis 2:16–17).

However, [Adam and Eve broke this law]. They committed a sin. Our initial parents lost their original integrity, righteousness, and relationship with God as a result of this sin. Consequently, [the fall of the human race] occurred. The force of evil has influenced human nature ever since. Our nature is sinful now.

But how far did the fall affect us?

Our condition is hopeless

Because of sin, which has profoundly impacted all of our abilities and left us utterly prone to evil, we are either drastically damaged or completely depraved. The Bible says that without Christ, both our material and immaterial parts are corrupt, indicating that this corruption affects the entire man.

See for example the following Bible texts:

1. The body is corrupted

“We understand that in order to destroy the body of sin and free us from the bonds of sin, our former selves were crucified alongside Him.” (Romans 6:6) and as Paul states in Romans 6:12, “Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions.”

2. Reason is corrupted

“Because they knew God, they did not acknowledge Him as God or offer thanks to Him; instead, their foolish hearts were darkened and their minds became futile” (Romans 1:21).

3. Conscience is corrupted

According to 1 Timothy 4:2, “…through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared.”

4. Emotions and desires are corrupted

Galatians 5:24 states, “And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”

5. The will is corrupted

We are aware that the law is spiritual, but I am a creature of the body, bought and sold by sin. Because I don’t know what I’m doing. Because I actually do the exact thing I detest rather than what I wish to do (Romans 7:14–15).

6. The heart is corrupted

According to Genesis 6:5, “The Lord saw that there was great wickedness in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of man’s heart was only evil continually.”

God offers hope

That’s the way things really are. We cannot freely come to Christ without first being regenerated by the Holy Spirit due to our extreme or complete corruption.

For this reason, God offers salvation in its entirety via Christ. Ephesians 2:4-5 states, “But God, rich in kindness, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—because of the great love with which He loved us, even while we were dead in our sins.
