How do we discover the works that God intended for us?

good-works

The Bible says that God has already planned good works for us (Ephesians 2:10). But how can we know we are carrying out God’s purpose and how do we find these works?

Jesus gives us the Holy Spirit

In John 15:5, Jesus likened the bond between Himself and His disciples to that of a vine and its branches. The life that passes from the vine to the branches is the Holy Spirit. He is the one who distributes God’s bounty to us by taking it. We have access to the wealth of the Father and the Son through the work of the Holy Spirit.

Guided by the Holy Spirit

“He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak [… He will glorify Me, for He will take what is Mine and declare it to you,” Jesus explained to His followers regarding the Holy Spirit (John 16:13-14). Being a guide to help us navigate life is one of the Holy Spirit’s most significant responsibilities. “When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth,” declares Jesus in John 16:13.

A mature child of God

According to Paul, we might follow the Spirit of God because we are God’s offspring. “Because everyone guided by the Holy Spirit of God is a son of God.” (Romans 8:14). Huios, the Greek word for sons used here, denotes maturity. We must be [born again] of the Spirit of God in order to be God’s children (John 3). However, in order to develop and evolve after being born again, we require the daily, unceasing guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Surrender to and depend on God

It is essential that we [fully surrender] in order to receive His counsel. The ability to let go and entrust all to God is another aspect of surrender. with the hope that He will then continue to lead us in all facets of life. The Holy Spirit can lead us and offer the answer to every problem we bring to Him when we live in complete dependence on Him.

Good works prepared beforehand

“Because we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we should walk in them,” Paul writes in Ephesians 2:10. God planned the good deeds He intended Christians to perform even before the earth was created. For this reason, in order to begin God’s work, we seek out the good deeds that He has already planned for us rather than creating our own.

Ask God to guide you

That’s why every Christian needs the direction of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the one who leads us to follow God’s plan for our lives as Christians after first wanting to make it known to us. That is why it is crucial that we sincerely confer with God before acting on our own intentions. We won’t know what God’s plan is for us unless we follow the lead of the Holy Spirit.
